A 78-year-old Freeport man died Wednesday evening after losing control of his motorcycle on Interstate 295 near Freeport.
Maine State Police confirmed that Edmund Goodman was riding his 2016 Indian Springfield motorcycle northbound around 7 PM when he likely experienced a medical event that impaired his ability to control the vehicle.
According to authorities, Goodman veered off the roadway to the left, onto the grass shoulder, where he struck the raised edge of a crossover. The collision caused the motorcycle to overturn multiple times, ejecting Goodman. Despite immediate assistance from passing motorists with medical training, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The northbound lane was closed for an investigation, involving officials from the Maine State Police, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, and Maine DOT. Authorities reported no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Yarmouth Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, along with Copp Motors. The Maine State Police are continuing the investigation.
As of this year, the Maine Department of Transportation indicates there have been fewer than 20 motorcycle fatalities in the state, primarily occurring from March to July. In 2022, there were a total of 25 motorcycle fatalities.
