A California Highway Patrol officer was killed in a collision on Highway 99 at 5:11 p.m. Monday.

Officer Brian Liles, 44, was riding his motorcycle when it collided with a truck-tractor just north of Highway 190, according to CHP.

Liles was thrown from his motorcycle and struck by a passing vehicle. He sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.

A 16-year veteran of the CHP, Liles was assigned to the Visalia Area office after previously serving in San Jose, Hayward, and Fresno.

In a statement, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences to Liles’ family and colleagues, calling his death a heartbreaking loss for the state.

Liles is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters. Flags at the State Capitol will fly at half staff in his honor.

CHP confirmed that Liles is the first officer to die in the line of duty for the agency since 2025.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident. A procession for Liles is scheduled.
