DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA) – Two Colorado residents were killed in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 14A near Deadwood on Aug. 6.
Shawn Lee Rector, 59, and Susan Renee Rector, 54, both from Frederick, Colorado, died after their motorcycle collided with a Jeep around 6:27 p.m. near mile marker 47.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the motorcycle crossed the centerline while negotiating a curve and struck a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling westbound. Neither of the motorcycle riders was wearing a helmet.
A 67-year-old man from Lead, who was a passenger in the Jeep, suffered minor injuries. The juvenile driver and another passenger in the Jeep were uninjured.
Highway 14A was closed for approximately three hours for emergency response and investigation. The crash is still under investigation, and authorities noted that the details released are preliminary.
