LEWISTON, Maine — A motorcyclist critically injured in a collision on August 8 is now receiving community support as he recovers.
Nick Danforth, 38, was severely injured when a vehicle pulled in front of his Harley-Davidson on Route 202 in Winthrop, according to authorities. He suffered multiple fractures, including to his skull and face, and injuries to his brain, spine, and neck.
Danforth has been a tireless advocate for suicide awareness in the Lewiston-Auburn area, founding the nonprofit Pain to Power following the loss of his father to suicide. He organized the ninth annual Ride for Suicide Awareness just two days post-accident, with dozens riding in his honor.
Emergency responders transported Danforth to Maine Medical Center, where he spent seven weeks hospitalized. His partner, Bry Longely, assists him with daily care, including donning a brace for his back and neck.
Community members have rallied to support the Danforth family, hosting fundraisers and creating a GoFundMe account to assist with medical expenses. Friends have also helped build a wheelchair ramp to increase accessibility at their home.
Despite significant weight loss and ongoing recovery challenges, Danforth is optimistic about his future, aiming to walk again next month and continue his advocacy work. “My mission is to help others feel better about their lives,” he stated.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
