Concerns Rise as Fatal Motorcycle Crashes Surge.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) – Over the past few weeks, multiple fatal motorcycle accidents have occurred across Western New York, with two recent incidents resulting in lives lost.

On the weekend, a 50-year-old motorcyclist was killed in the Town of Burns, Allegany County, while a separate accident in the Town of Aurora, Erie County, claimed the life of a 38-year-old motorcyclist. Authorities reported that the New York State Police have seen an alarming 84% increase in motorcycle collisions from 2024 to 2025.

Trooper James O’Callaghan of the New York State Police indicated that the summer months typically see a rise in fatal motorcycle incidents. He noted, “Usually between Memorial Day and Labor Day, we see most of our collisions and fatal collisions,” adding that excessive speeds and lack of awareness from other drivers are significant factors.

O’Callaghan stated that some motorcyclists are traveling at double or triple the speed limits, which severely limits their reaction time in emergencies. He highlighted the tragic case of a 21-year-old motorcyclist who lost control on Fisk Road, a straight roadway, due to excessive speed.

Law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police, are actively enforcing traffic laws to improve safety for all road users. O’Callaghan emphasized the need for drivers in vehicles to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic signals to protect motorcyclists.

The investigation into these recent accidents is ongoing, with no additional details released at this time.
