DANBURY, CT — Melissa Ramirez, 27, of Stamford, was charged with manslaughter after a July 13 crash that killed Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside and his girlfriend, Brittany Islami.
The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on Sugar Hollow Road, where Ramirez was driving a Jeep Compass that collided head-on with Whiteside’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to an arrest warrant, Ramirez’s blood-alcohol level was 0.14, nearly double the legal limit, and she was allegedly traveling at 56 mph in a 45 mph zone prior to the crash. Witnesses reported that the Jeep crossed over the double yellow line, but did not observe the motorcycle swerving.
Ramirez sustained broken ribs and head injuries, receiving treatment at Danbury Hospital. She was arraigned Monday, with her bond set at $300,000. She faces two counts of second-degree manslaughter and charges of driving under the influence, speeding, and improper lane usage.
The motorcycle, registered to Whiteside, was found on its side in the leftmost lane, while the Jeep exhibited substantial front-end damage. The warrant noted evidence of alcohol consumption, including empty cans found in the vehicle.
The next court date is scheduled for Aug. 31.
