Austin, TX – TxDOT Launches Campaign for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging drivers to be more vigilant for motorcyclists during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May.
According to TxDOT officials, nearly 9,000 motorcycle crashes occurred in Texas last year, resulting in 557 fatalities—15% of all crash deaths statewide. The agency emphasizes the importance of looking twice for motorcycles to prevent accidents.
“Too many motorcyclists are killed on Texas roads, and we can help prevent these crashes by sharing the road,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams.
Families affected by motorcycle crashes are sharing their stories to raise awareness. Amy Jo Miller, a Bell County resident, was severely injured when another driver turned left in front of her boyfriend’s motorcycle. She continues to recover from her injuries after the incident occurred over 15 years ago.
Case Clark from Lubbock died in a head-on collision while riding his motorcycle, leaving behind loved ones who remember him as a cherished friend and family member. Brendan Johnson of Austin was also killed when a driver turned left in front of him, resulting in a tragic loss for his community.
TxDOT advises drivers to adopt safety habits that could save lives, including checking mirrors and blind spots, using turn signals, and maintaining safe following distances.
