Motorcycle Accident Claims Life of Allman Brothers Band Co-Founder

MACON, GA — Duane Allman, co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band, died in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971, at the age of 24.

According to authorities, Allman lost control of his motorcycle while attempting to avoid a tractor-trailer. He sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead during surgery at Middle Georgia Medical Center three hours post-accident.

The accident occurred as the band was transitioning between tours. At the time of his death, their live album, At Fillmore East, was gaining significant traction, recently reaching No. 46 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Witnesses reported the scene as frantic, with immediate medical assistance requested. Emergency responders from the local police were on-site, and investigations were launched to determine the full circumstances of the crash.

In light of this tragedy, the Allman Brothers Band resumed activities, releasing Eat A Peach just three months later. Notably, Berry Oakley, another band member, also died in a motorcycle crash just blocks away from the site of Allman’s accident in 1972.
