Woodbine, NJ – A fatal crash occurred on August 5 around 4:15 p.m. on Route 611/Tyler Road, resulting in one death and one injury.
Walter Chattin, 77, of Villas, lost control of his vehicle, struck a utility pole, and flipped over, according to New Jersey State Police. The vehicle caught fire shortly after the impact.
Authorities reported that Diana Chattin, 70, also of Villas, was in the backseat and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Walter sustained burns and broken ribs and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Good Samaritans, including Paul Fowler, attempted to rescue Walter from the wreckage. Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach Diana and the couple’s two dogs due to the intense flames. Walter later thanked Fowler for saving his life, calling him a hero.
The crash remains under investigation, according to state authorities.
