Three people died in a crash early Sunday morning at the intersection of Route 301 and Governors Park Lane in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
The collision occurred around 12:45 a.m. when a Tesla making a left turn failed to yield to a southbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle, striking its passenger side. A third vehicle later collided with one of the motorcycle passengers and fled the scene. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and one died later at a hospital.
A memorial has been established at the intersection, with wooden crosses and flowers honoring the victims. Neighbors have expressed long-standing concerns about the intersection’s safety, emphasizing the need for traffic improvements. Residents James White and Willie Smalls both reported feeling anxious navigating the area and have called for a traffic signal.
Officials from the Maryland State Highway Administration stated that design work for a traffic signal is nearly 90% complete, with construction expected to begin by year-end, pending weather conditions. Traffic engineers will also evaluate the intersection following the completion of the official police report.
This crash was part of a recent spike in motorcycle incidents in Prince George’s County, which has seen 21 fatal accidents this year. County Executive Aisha Braveboy noted ongoing advocacy for road safety improvements.
Authorities are urging motorists to drive safely, highlighting the need for community cooperation in reducing traffic fatalities. Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Michael Jackson reiterated the preventability of many accidents, emphasizing the dangers of distracted driving.
