One person was killed in a crash involving a FedEx truck and a gas-powered bike in Fort Pierce on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on East Midway Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). A 9-year-old boy, riding the bike with a 13-year-old passenger, was pronounced dead after being transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
Witnesses and police reports indicate the bike was traveling eastbound on the sidewalk when it collided with the FedEx truck, which was exiting a driveway onto the sidewalk. The front of the bike impacted the right bumper of the truck.
The 13-year-old passenger was also taken to Lawnwood Hospital with serious injuries, while the FedEx truck driver, a 53-year-old man, was uninjured. Emergency responders, including FHP troopers, worked at the scene for several hours.
A FedEx spokesperson expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and stated the company is cooperating with the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities assessing lane closures and traffic patterns in the area.
