STURGIS, S.D. — Four motorcyclists sustained injuries in three separate crashes near the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally between August 12 and August 13.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported the incidents in its daily “Rally Tally,” which details crashes and crime tied to the event. The data spans 6 a.m. August 12 to 6 a.m. August 13.
Motorcycle Crash on Wildlife Loop Road
CUSTER STATE PARK — At approximately 11:30 a.m. on August 12, two Harley-Davidson motorcycles collided while navigating a curve on Wildlife Loop Road. The 2004 Harley’s operator, a 71-year-old man, and the 2019 Harley’s operator, a 69-year-old man, both lost control. Each operator suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Custer hospital for treatment.
Rain-Induced Crash on I-90
PIEDMONT, S.D. — A 1993 Harley-Davidson motorcycle crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on August 13 on eastbound Interstate 90. The 58-year-old male operator lost control due to wet roadway conditions, veering into the median. He was taken to a Rapid City hospital with minor injuries.
Minor Injury Incident East of Custer
BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST — A 62-year-old male motorcyclist crashed shortly after 1 p.m. on August 12 on U.S. 16A, approximately half a mile east of the Needles Highway turnoff. During a left curve, the operator lost control but declined medical treatment at the scene, sustaining only minor injuries while wearing a helmet.
Emergency services responded to all incidents, with investigations ongoing.
