A 78-year-old Freeport man died in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 295 near Freeport on Wednesday evening.
According to the Maine State Police, Edmund Goodman was riding his 2016 Indian Springfield motorcycle northbound when he likely experienced a medical episode at approximately 7 PM.
The motorcycle veered off the roadway, struck the raised edge of a crossover, overturned multiple times, and ejected Goodman. Despite immediate assistance from passing motorists, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities from the Maine State Police, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, and Maine Department of Transportation responded to the incident. They closed the northbound lane of the highway for an investigation. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Yarmouth Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene, along with Copp Motors. The investigation by State Police remains ongoing.
According to the Maine Department of Transportation, nearly 20 motorcycle fatalities have been reported in Maine this year, primarily occurring from March to July. The total for all of last year was 25 fatalities.
