CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — Claiborne County Mayor Joseph “Joe” Lorne Brooks died in a motorcycle crash on Friday night, with the funeral scheduled for Thursday.
According to authorities, Brooks, 56, was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on State Route 33 around 11 p.m. when he veered off the road and struck a guardrail near the Claiborne County line in Union County. He did not survive the crash.
Brooks, who was elected mayor in 2018 and was seeking a third term, was remembered in his obituary as a community advocate and a veteran of the United States Navy.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, July 30, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Claiborne High School, 815 Davis Dr. in New Tazewell, followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m.
An additional visitation is planned for Friday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a graveside service at 12 p.m. in the Joseph Brooks Cemetery on Cave Springs Road. The family requests attendees to wear “Vote Joe” or red shirts at the graveside.
