Gulfport Firefighter Injured in Motorcycle Crash
Gulfport firefighter Mark Hilley sustained severe injuries in a motorcycle accident on May 3 while riding with his 14-year-old daughter, Natalie.
The crash occurred around 2:41 p.m. on a rural road less than two miles from their home. Hilley, 40, was airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where he was treated for a collapsed right lung, nine broken ribs, and lacerations to his kidneys, liver, and spleen. His daughter was released with minor injuries, according to authorities.
Hilley, a U.S. Marine veteran, had previously devoted two decades to public service. Following the accident, he expressed gratitude upon realizing the extent of community support, including a GoFundMe campaign initiated by his sister to assist with medical expenses.
The combined medical bills from the helicopter transport and hospital stay are estimated at over $200,000, Hilley reported. He stated that while he has accrued sick leave, his income will see a significant reduction.
Despite the traumatic experience, Hilley has committed to his recovery, emphasizing the importance of family. He noted that he will never ride a motorcycle again, citing safety concerns for himself and his daughter.
“I won’t stop until I can provide for my family,” Hilley said, reflecting on the necessity of prioritizing loved ones.
The incident remains under investigation, with no further updates on contributing factors released at this time.
