HPD Corporal Charged with False Reporting Following Crash That Left Motorcyclist Seriously Injured.

HONOLULU – A Honolulu police corporal, Vasai Isala Jr., has been charged with False Reporting to Law Enforcement Authorities following a motor vehicle collision that seriously injured a motorcyclist near Aloha Stadium on September 12, 2023.

Authorities said Isala, 18 years with HPD, misrepresented details of the incident to responding officers. The 62-year-old motorcyclist suffered significant injuries, including a concussion and spinal damage.

According to police records, Isala provided at least three different accounts of the crash, including a statement that a bus was involved. Some of these claims were captured on body cameras worn by other officers.

Records indicate that Isala was not tested for impairment at the scene, and details regarding his departure from the crash site remain unclear. The investigation into both Isala’s actions and how responding officers handled the incident is ongoing.

On December 4, HPD placed Isala on restricted duty and removed his police powers. He has since taken an injured leave and has not returned to work.

Isala has previously faced criminal scrutiny, having been charged with DUI in 2015 after a separate incident, but was acquitted.
