HPD corporal faces restricted duty and loss of police powers following serious motorcycle crash.

HONOLULU (Local News Wire) – An off-duty Honolulu Police Department Corporal was involved in a crash on Kamehameha Highway on Sept. 22, 2023, resulting in serious injuries to a motorcyclist.

Vasai Isala Jr., 18-year veteran of the HPD, reportedly rear-ended 62-year-old Randy Sagario’s motorcycle. Sagario sustained road rash, a concussion, and serious spinal injuries. Isala has since been reassigned to non-patrol duties and had his police powers revoked, according to authorities.

Witnesses reported that Isala was operating his vehicle at a red light when he collided with the motorcycle. The first officer on the scene documented multiple conflicting statements from Isala about the crash.

The Honolulu Police Department confirmed they are conducting an internal investigation into the handling of the incident by responding officers. Isala’s sobriety status remains unconfirmed, as he was not subjected to a field sobriety test.

Further investigation revealed that Isala was on last chance probation for a previous undisclosed incident at the time of the crash. Despite being determined at fault, he was not cited.

Randy Sagario expressed frustration over ongoing medical issues and called for accountability within the HPD, stating the need for transparency in such incidents.

The crash investigation was closed in November, according to records. An HPD spokesperson noted that no additional officers have been placed on restricted duty while the investigation continues.
