HPD Launches Investigation into Officer-Involved Crash Resulting in Motorcyclist Injury.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Honolulu police officer driving a subsidized vehicle injured a motorcyclist in a crash on Kamehameha Highway on Sept. 22 at 9:10 p.m.

Off-duty Officer Vasai Isala, Jr. collided with the motorcyclist at a stoplight, resulting in serious injuries to the rider, 62-year-old Randy Sagario, who was thrown from his bike.

Sagario was transported to Tripler Army Medical Center with a serious neck injury and road rash. He has reported ongoing health issues, including nausea and headaches, which have affected his ability to work.

According to HPD records, no field sobriety test was administered to Isala following the crash, and the investigation is still classified.

A spokesperson for the Honolulu Police Department stated that an administrative investigation is underway regarding the incident and the handling of the responding officers.

Sagario has sought a copy of the crash report but received only partial documents, with HPD acknowledging the investigation remains open.

Witnesses reported that Isala had been attending a party before the incident. HPD confirmed that Isala remains on full duty.

Sagario urged motorcyclists to wear helmets and protective gear, attributing his survival to the precautions he took.

HNN Investigates will continue to follow developments related to the ongoing investigation.
