RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – An Oklahoma man died in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 85 about five miles north of Deadwood on Saturday, August 8.
Authorities identified the victim as James Edward Skillett, 72, of Shawnee, Oklahoma. The incident occurred at approximately 4:41 p.m.
According to preliminary details from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Skillett was riding a 2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide in the left lane when he lost control while braking for another motorcycle that was turning left.
Skillett was ejected from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was transported to Monument Health in Spearfish, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
