LAKE FOREST, CA — A 14-year-old riding an e-motorcycle allegedly struck and fatally injured 81-year-old Ed Ashman on April 16 near El Toro High School.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred at approximately 2:41 p.m. at the intersection of Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive. Witnesses stated the teen was performing stunts in the roadway when he collided with Ashman, who was walking home. After the crash, the teen fled the scene but was later identified and taken into custody by law enforcement.
Ashman later succumbed to his injuries, prompting prosecutors to upgrade charges against the teen’s mother to involuntary manslaughter, as she had previously been warned about the illegal riding behavior. The e-motorcycle, a Surron Ultra Bee, is classified under California law as a vehicle requiring proper licensing, registration, and insurance for public roadway use.
Authorities confirmed that the Orange County District Attorney is pursuing charges related to the incident, emphasizing the serious implications of the teenage rider’s actions and the equipment regulations in place for high-powered electric motorcycles.
Response teams from the ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT arrived at the scene, and a traffic collision report is currently being processed. No additional lane closures were reported in the area following the incident.
