LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Authorities are raising alarms over a significant increase in motorcycle crashes in Clark County, prompting safety warnings.
In April, law enforcement has responded to at least five serious motorcycle crashes, including a recent incident that closed part of the 215 Beltway at Rainbow Boulevard for several hours, authorities confirmed.
Shawn Haggstrom, Public Information Officer for Nevada State Police – Highway Patrol, stated that speed and reckless driving are major contributors to these accidents. “Most fatal crashes involve speeding and unsafe lane changes,” Haggstrom said. He noted that several motorcycles have collided with other vehicles while attempting to merge lanes.
Haggstrom added that many motorcycle-related incidents are caused by the motorcyclists themselves, particularly with the practice of “lane-splitting,” which is illegal in Nevada. “It’s too dangerous, and its prevalence is concerning,” he said.
May 1 marks the beginning of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends several safety measures for riders and drivers.
For riders, they suggest:
- Wearing bright safety gear and staying visible.
- Utilizing proper protective gear including helmets and abrasion-resistant clothing.
- Participating in training to enhance riding skills.
For drivers, they advise:
- Being attentive to blind spots when turning or changing lanes.
- Avoiding distractions, such as texting.
- Maintaining a safe following distance from motorcycles.
Officials emphasize the need for collective responsibility to ensure safety on the roads. For more details on staying safe, visit MSF-USA.org.
