Maine State Police Probe Fatal Crash on I-95.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety, a fatal crash occurred on Interstate 95 in Newport late Tuesday night, March 31, 2026.

Authorities reported the incident took place just before 11:40 p.m. when multiple calls were received about a vehicle stopped in the northbound lane near mile marker 157. The situation escalated into a collision involving a tractor-trailer.

Investigation revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Volt, driven by 33-year-old Juan Guallpa of Lempster, New Hampshire, was rear-ended by a 2021 Freightliner. The impact caused the Volt to be pushed into the median, with the tractor-trailer overturning onto its passenger side and obstructing both southbound lanes.

Guallpa was pronounced dead at the scene, while the tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for treatment.

Officials are currently investigating why the Chevrolet was stationary in the roadway. The crash prompted the closure of both I-95 directions for several hours, with northbound lanes reopening around 3 a.m. Southbound traffic remains limited as cleanup efforts continue, expected to last several more hours.
