DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 19-year-old man faces multiple charges following a fatal motorcycle crash on August 3.
Cayson Sumpter is charged with homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, no valid driver’s license, stop sign violation, speeding, and no insurance, according to authorities.
The crash occurred at the Madison Street intersection in the 1600 block of West 8th Street, where 49-year-old John Coons was struck by Sumpter’s SUV while Coons was legally traveling without a stop sign.
Investigators determined Sumpter was driving recklessly, with video evidence showing speeds of 53 mph in a 25 mph zone, officials said. Sumpter reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign before the collision.
Both individuals were transported to a local hospital, where Coons later succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation by the Davenport Police Department.
Sumpter is currently held at the Scott County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond, per jail records.
