OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — Memorial Day Weekend sees multiple fatal accidents across Oklahoma roadways, including incidents in Harmon and Sequoyah Counties.
A man was killed and a passenger critically injured when their vehicle went over a drop-off on Highway 30 in Harmon County on May 27. Authorities are on the scene.
In Sequoyah County, a multi-car crash resulted in a fatality, with investigations ongoing.
In Edmond, a man in a wheelchair was struck and killed while crossing the road, and the individual pushing him later died at a hospital.
Separately, Edmond police are investigating a vehicle pursuit related to a theft. Alleged suspects in the theft hit a couple in their late 70s after running a red light, both individuals are reported critically injured.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), there were four fatal accidents during the Memorial Day Weekend last year. So far this year, there have been three reported fatalities, with ongoing investigations into additional incidents.
A Facebook post from OHP indicates that last year, Oklahoma experienced 531 crashes over the Memorial Day holiday, including four fatalities, with over 7% linked to alcohol or drug impairment.
Experts anticipate increased traffic this weekend, urging drivers to ensure vehicle readiness. “We’re expecting more cars on the road,” said Greg Godbout, AAA Emergency Roadside Supervisor.
The OHP also advises buckling up, noting two of last year’s fatalities involved unrestrained occupants.
Motorcycle safety remains a focus, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urging both drivers and motorcyclists to exercise caution.
