Mississippi Reports Highest Motorcycle Fatalities in 2023
Mississippi led the nation in motorcycle crash fatalities in 2023, with 189 reported deaths, according to a new analysis.
The data was compiled from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by the law firm Big Auto Accident Attorneys. The report highlights that Mississippi had the highest fatality rate among motorcyclists, significantly impacting road safety initiatives in the state.
Following Mississippi, Texas reported 179 motorcycle fatalities, while Missouri had 129 and South Carolina 120. These figures indicate a concerning trend for motorcyclists across these states.
Despite assumptions around reckless driving being the primary cause of fatalities, the analysis reveals that 79% of motorcyclists involved in deadly crashes were wearing helmets, and about 83% of fatalities did not involve alcohol. It is legally required to wear a helmet on Mississippi roads.
Experts suggest that factors such as poor road lighting, wildlife hazards, and unaccustomed drivers contribute to these high fatality rates. Nic Edgson, CEO of Big Auto Accident Attorneys, indicates these factors, combined with emergency response times, may exacerbate the situation.
To enhance safety while riding, Edgson recommends being visible, maintaining defensive positioning, and ensuring motorcycles are in good mechanical condition.
