A motorcyclist was hospitalized following a crash on North MoPac Expressway Saturday morning, July 11, 2023.
Austin Police responded to the incident at 11:53 a.m. in the 5500 block of northbound MoPac Expressway, near Far West Boulevard. Authorities reported that a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle collided, resulting in the rider being pinned beneath the vehicle.
The motorcyclist was conscious and breathing before being transported to a local hospital by Austin-Travis County EMS. Their condition has not been disclosed, and no charges have been filed as of now.
Witnesses reported seeing two motorcycles traveling between lanes of traffic shortly before the collision. Footage shared online showed the crash scene, including a witness who helped block traffic behind the rider until emergency services arrived.
Austin Police stated that lane splitting is an “extremely dangerous maneuver” that can lead to severe consequences for motorcyclists. Texas law prohibits riders from operating between lanes of moving vehicles.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, nearly 9,000 motorcycle crashes occurred statewide in 2025, resulting in 557 fatalities. Police continue to urge drivers and motorcyclists to stay alert and adhere to traffic laws.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
