Mother of NC A&T football player killed in crash mourns as she shifts from planning his birthday to organizing his funeral.

Motorcycle Crash Claims Life of North Carolina A&T Football Player

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Kelvin Broadhurst Jr., a 20-year-old North Carolina A&T State University football player, died in a motorcycle crash Saturday evening.

According to the Greensboro Police Department, Broadhurst, of Woodland, South Carolina, was riding his Ducati motorcycle along Interstate 40 East when the accident occurred around 4:57 p.m. Authorities confirmed that he lost control while taking the ramp to U.S. 29 South, veered left, and struck a guardrail, resulting in him being thrown from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is currently under investigation, and no further details regarding potential contributing factors have been released.

Broadhurst was a defensive lineman for the football team, participating in 28 career games and recording 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was also pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at the university.

His mother, Latoya Lyles, described her son as kind and driven, highlighting his commitment to academics and community service. She had been planning Broadhurst’s 21st birthday celebration just days before the crash, only to face the heart-wrenching task of organizing a funeral instead.

“Right before the accident, he texted me,” Lyles said. “Then 10 minutes later… they called and said he was in an accident.”

Lyles noted that Broadhurst’s father passed away in September 2022, a loss that deeply affected him.

In response to the tragedy, North Carolina A&T has made Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) available for students in need of support. Students seeking assistance can visit CAPS in Murphy Hall, Suite 109, or call 336-334-7727.
