Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on Beartooth Highway in Wyoming
A motorcyclist died in a crash on U.S. 212, the Beartooth Highway, on July 27, 2026, near mile marker 21.
Authorities reported that the accident occurred between the Top of the World Store and the Island Lake Campground. Emergency responders included the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), First Flight of Wyoming, and Red Lodge Fire Rescue. An investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest the incident may have been caused by a medical emergency or operator inattention.
This incident marks the seventh motorcycle accident in the area this year. WHP Spokesman Aaron Brown pointed out that seven crashes have also been recorded on Wyoming Highway 296, known as Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, tying 2026 for the worst year on record.
Brown noted that WHP troopers have informally reported up to 18 motorcycle crashes this year across both highways, significantly more than the combined total from 2021 to 2025.
Brown emphasized the dangers on these scenic routes, where motorcyclists may be distracted by the landscape, leading to critical errors while navigating tight curves.
Another motorcycle fatality occurred in Casper on the same day, raising concerns about the rising number of motorcycle accidents across Wyoming. Authorities are urging both residents and visitors to remain vigilant as the upcoming Sturgis Motorcycle Rally approaches, which typically brings increased motorcycle traffic through the state.
Brown advised motorcycle riders to focus on safety, stating, “If you’re going to do the Beartooth or Chief Joseph, ride within your skills and slow down.”
