WEST MICHIGAN — Two motorcyclists died in separate incidents this week in Kent and Ionia counties, raising concerns for rider safety on local roads.
Authorities said one motorcyclist died after colliding with a deer in Kent County. In a separate incident, another biker was killed in a crash involving a car on M-66 in Ionia County.
According to the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts (MTCF), 84% of motorcycle crashes with other vehicles occur on busy streets during left turns. In 2023, MTCF reported 3,056 motorcycle crashes statewide, resulting in 165 fatalities.
Data from MTCF highlights that most fatalities happen from Friday to Sunday, with more than 610,000 licensed motorcyclists in Michigan. Notably, 53% of fatal motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle occur between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., with peak times between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Michigan Department of State advises motorists to maintain distance when following motorcyclists and to be vigilant at intersections. Drivers are reminded that the majority of motorcycle-related incidents take place on city streets rather than highways.
