Motorcyclist Advocates Emphasize That Safety Requires Efforts from Both Riders and Drivers.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, but recent reports highlight a significant uptick in motorcycle crashes in New Mexico.

This week has seen five separate motorcycle incidents, with four resulting in fatalities. According to the New Mexico Motorcyclist Rights Association, more motorcycles are appearing on the roads as spring weather encourages riding.

Richard Sturgeon, a spokesman for the association, emphasized that many motorcyclists may not be adequately prepared after a long winter. “They haven’t been riding and, all of a sudden, they get on the bike and zoom off,” he said.

The association urges motorists to remain vigilant, as speed has been cited as a factor in some crashes. “Check twice. Save a life,” said Joseph Gonzales, another spokesman, stressing that both drivers and motorcyclists must share responsibility for road safety.

As part of ongoing safety efforts, Sturgeon advocated for a motorcycle awareness specialty plate. The plates, approved through recent legislation, aim to enhance visibility for motorcyclists. Funds generated from the plates will support courses through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and safety signage initiatives.

Further information about the specialty plates can be found at mvd.newmexico.gov.
