Motorcyclist dies in Kapiolani Boulevard crash, identified by authorities.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A fatal motorcycle accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Kapiolani Boulevard in Moiliili, identified victim is Kenneth Calimpong, 51.

The crash took place around 3:15 p.m. near the Mahiai St. intersection. A 67-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound and made a U-turn, resulting in a collision with Calimpong, who was also westbound.

Calimpong was ejected onto the roadway and transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Authorities confirmed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Police stated that speed does not appear to be a contributing factor, and the involvement of drugs or alcohol is still under investigation.

Eyewitness Account

State Rep. Ikaika Olds, D-McCully, was campaigning nearby when the crash occurred. He reported hearing the screeching tires followed by the collision.

Olds rushed over, instructing bystanders to call 911 while assessing Calimpong’s condition.

The 67-year-old motorist was unharmed and remained at the scene. Police are gathering eyewitness accounts, noting suggestions of an illegal U-turn preceding the crash.

Traffic Safety Concerns

Olds expressed concerns about the Kapiolani Boulevard area, citing frequent speeding and illegal U-turns. He advocates for increased safety measures in the corridor.

“This stretch is problematic due to heavy traffic from nearby freeway ramps,” Olds stated. “Drivers often make illegal turns to access side streets.”

Calimpong’s death marks the 23rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year.
