Motorcyclist Killed in NM 528 Collision Early Saturday Morning
A motorcyclist died early on May 13 after a collision with a truck on NM Highway 528 in Rio Rancho.
According to the Rio Rancho Police Department (RRPD), the crash occurred at approximately 2:48 a.m. at the intersection of NM 528 and Sabana Grande Ave SE. Emergency responders pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. Southbound lanes of NM 528 were closed at High Resort Boulevard during the investigation, reopening around 8:18 a.m.
Witnesses reported that the motorcycle, traveling southbound, accelerated to a high speed while attempting to pass the truck in the bicycle lane before striking it. Preliminary investigations indicate both vehicles were moving southbound at the time of the incident. No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
This fatal crash marks the second deadly incident on NM 528 within six weeks. A prior collision on April 4 resulted in one death and two injuries, prompting RRPD to increase enforcement measures along the corridor. Ongoing safety improvements, including the planned installation of speed cameras, are under review, though long-term improvements are not expected until 2029-2030.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) reported 24 crashes on the 3.5-mile stretch of NM 528 between Idalia Road NE and Honduras Road NE in 2025 alone. Further updates on traffic safety measures are expected as the investigation progresses.
