SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — A 28-year-old motorcyclist from New Jersey was pronounced dead Friday following a solo-vehicle crash on Empire Grade.
According to California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz Unit, the incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. The motorcyclist was riding a black 2023 BMW S1000RR motorcycle southbound when he lost control for reasons currently under investigation.
The motorcycle crashed against the asphalt roadway and skidded off, striking a pole before tumbling down an embankment. Emergency medical personnel performed life-saving efforts, but the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were involved. Lane closures were implemented for the investigation.
CHP Capt. Grant Boles urged motorcyclists to wear helmets and protective gear, adjust to weather conditions, stay alert, and regularly check their motorcycle’s condition.
