Motorcyclist Killed in Kaukonahua Road Crash Identified as Oahu’s 16th Traffic Fatality of 2019

HONOLULU — A motorcyclist died following a crash on Kaukonahua Road around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday, marking Oahu’s 16th traffic fatality of 2019, according to police.

The 26-year-old man was riding a Yamaha in a group of five motorcycles when he lost control upon entering S-turns, colliding with a guardrail. He was ejected from the bike, struck a signpost, and landed in nearby bushes.

Another motorcyclist, a 23-year-old man riding a Suzuki, also lost control and crashed into the guardrail. He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital in serious condition. The 26-year-old was transported to a hospital in extremely critical condition but later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the wearing of helmets by both riders is unclear. Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash but noted speed may have contributed.

Kaukonahua Road was closed from approximately 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., with all lanes now reopened. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family.

This incident raises Oahu’s traffic fatality count to 16 for the year, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
