MOTORCYCLIST STRIKES DEER, DIES IN ANN ARBOR CRASH
ANN ARBOR, MI — A motorcyclist who succumbed to injuries after colliding with a deer early Sunday has been identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Gates, a University of Michigan student.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on September 21, on Jackson Avenue near Worden Avenue, according to Chris Page, spokesperson for the Ann Arbor Police Department. Gates was traveling east when he struck the deer, leading to a crash.
Emergency responders transported Gates to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he later died from significant injuries. Authorities confirmed on Thursday that he was the individual involved in the incident.
Gates was pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and had a background in robotics competitions, as noted in an obituary from Zaagman Memorial Chapel. He had a passion for 3D printing and music, participating in both marching and jazz bands.
Originally from Massachusetts, Gates moved to Michigan at the age of 8 and graduated from Forest Hills Eastern High School. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, and extended family.
