New Jersey News 12 Reports.

Two fatal crashes occurred within 25 minutes of each other overnight in Bridgeport, resulting in two deaths.

The first crash happened at 11:57 p.m. on Park Avenue near Suburban Avenue, involving an SUV and a motorcycle. Harry Mergoni, 28, of Bridgeport, was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning. Authorities said the SUV driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Witnesses reported seeing emergency responders and described the scene as chaotic. “I look outside. I see the ambulance and the fire department and people screaming,” said Ayman Halabi, a resident of Park Avenue. He noted that accidents in the area have become frequent, attributing them to speeding drivers and the roadway’s layout.

According to police, Mergoni was traveling southbound on Park Avenue when the SUV attempted a left turn onto the roadway, colliding with him. The crash propelled Mergoni from his motorcycle.

Approximately 25 minutes later, a second crash occurred on Fairfield Avenue near Railroad Avenue. Police received multiple reports of a vehicle losing control and hitting a wall. The investigation revealed that Garth Lawrence, 62, was traveling eastbound when he veered left, struck a sidewalk, and collided with a light pole and concrete retaining wall. Emergency crews extricated Lawrence, who was also taken to St. Vincent’s but later died from his injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate both incidents and request that anyone with relevant information contact them.
