Newberg motorcyclist identified as victim of solo crash on I-5 near Marquam Bridge.

A 60-year-old Newberg man was killed in a motorcycle crash on southbound Interstate 5 near the Marquam Bridge on Friday.

Authorities identified the victim as Jason A. Doherty, who was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he lost control and struck a jersey barrier around 6:18 p.m.

Portland police said no other vehicles were involved in the incident, which occurred at exit 299A, just south of the bridge.

Emergency crews from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, who happened to be nearby, attempted lifesaving measures, but Doherty was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police noted Doherty was wearing a half-shell novelty helmet that is not approved by the Department of Transportation. His family has been notified.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team is investigating the crash. Southbound I-5 was temporarily closed as traffic was rerouted onto northbound I-405.

This incident marks the 20th traffic-related death in Portland this year and the eighth involving a motorcycle or scooter. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to submit a tip online, referencing case number 26-178327.
