NJ Sheriff’s Officer Killed in I-78 Motorcycle Accident, Authorities Report.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — A Union County Sheriff’s officer died in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 78 on Friday morning, officials confirmed.

Joseph DeVito, 28, of Kenilworth, sustained fatal injuries in the incident reported at 10:30 a.m., according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan.

DeVito was traveling eastbound on I-78 in the westbound lanes when he collided with a Peterbilt semi-trailer driven by Wandy Gomez, 32, of Groveport, Ohio. The crash occurred near milepost 43.4, and DeVito was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The roadway was closed for an extended period to facilitate the investigation.

Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli described DeVito as “a dedicated member of the Sheriff’s Office who served with honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the community.”

Corvelli expressed deep sorrow over DeVito’s loss and requested the public to keep his family and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
