Officials Urge Motorcycle Safety Awareness in Anticipation of NWA Bike Rally.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Authorities reported 8 fatal motorcycle crashes on Arkansas highways since September 30, 2023, as thousands of bikers prepare for the upcoming Bikes, Blues, and Barbeque event.

The Arkansas Department of Public Safety confirmed the fatalities amid concerns for safety with increased motorcycle traffic expected over the weekend. Officials urge all drivers to remain vigilant.

“We are seeing many motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries this year,” said Cassie Branstetter, Branch Chief for Interpretation at the Buffalo National River. “Those phone calls to friends and family are phone calls that no one wants to make.”

Branstetter emphasized the importance of cautious driving, particularly during sharp turns and within speed limits to prevent accidents.

Local motorcyclist Rashaun Wilburd reiterated the dangers, noting that motorcyclists lack the protection of a vehicle. “You jump in front of motorcyclists, and we don’t have the protective arm around us like a car,” he said.

Wilburd, who has reduced his riding due to safety concerns after losing a friend in an accident, advocates for wearing safety gear. “I wear all the gear—boots, jackets, vest. That would be very helpful in case of an accident,” he added.

The Bikes, Blues, and Barbeque rally, the world’s largest charity motorcycle event, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 5, in Northwest Arkansas, with activities continuing through the weekend. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and be alert for increased motorcycle traffic.
