Motorcyclist Safety Emphasized as Fatalities Increase in South Dakota
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Two motorcyclists were killed in a crash earlier this month, highlighting the importance of motorcycle safety as warmer weather brings more riders to the streets.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the state averages 21 fatal motorcycle crashes annually. The recent collision involved two riders and occurred as many motorcyclists return to the roads.
Brian Christiaansen, Director of the South Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program, noted the ongoing demand for motorcycle safety training. Although not legally required for licensure, the courses are popular among new riders seeking hands-on education and guidance.
“People are excited to take the course,” Christiaansen said. He emphasized that the program aims to reduce fatalities by instilling safe riding practices.
Christiaansen stressed the significance of making informed decisions while riding, including wearing appropriate gear and remaining sober. “Making good decisions can prevent many fatalities,” he stated.
He urged all drivers to minimize distractions while driving, encouraging them to keep phones away and remain vigilant. Authorities continue to promote motorcycle safety awareness as the riding season approaches.
