Suspect Sought in Fatal Hit-and-Run on SR-38
BIG BEAR, Calif. (August 31, 2026) — A fatal hit-and-run accident occurred on Highway 38 at Greenway Drive around 7:09 a.m. on August 31, when a vehicle struck a pedestrian and fled eastbound on Big Bear Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after. Despite attempts by fire personnel to perform CPR, the victim, who had severe facial injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:04 a.m. Authorities confirmed the fatality under Incident No. 0148.
The suspect vehicle is described as a gray Toyota Tundra, last seen heading toward Yucaipa, with a traffic cone lodged underneath and noticeable damage. Witnesses reported the vehicle swerving erratically prior to the collision.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident and seeking public assistance in locating the driver. Witnesses with information are encouraged to come forward.
