HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) – A fatal dirt bike accident occurred in Hilo on Wednesday night, with police launching an investigation.
The incident took place shortly before 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of West Kawili and Kinoole Streets.
According to authorities, a yellow and black Suzuki dirt bike traveling west collided with a Nissan sedan heading east while turning into a business parking lot.
The 22-year-old woman driving the sedan and her two passengers were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
The male driver of the dirt bike was unresponsive at the scene; despite lifesaving efforts by Police, Fire, and Medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m.
His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
This incident marks Hawaii Island’s fifth traffic fatality of 2026, a decrease from nine fatalities at this time last year.
