TULSA, OKLA (KTUL) — A motorcycle crash Saturday night near Harvard Avenue and 51st Street resulted in one fatality and renewed discussions about rider safety in Tulsa.
Authorities confirmed that a 51-year-old man died after losing control of his motorcycle while reportedly speeding and passing cars before colliding with a median.
Tulsa Police reported a rise in motorcycle incidents this time of year, attributing much of it to speeding and reckless driving. “Speed is a huge contributing factor,” said Richard Meulenburg, a police spokesperson. Witnesses described the man’s erratic driving prior to the crash.
In Oklahoma, riders under 18 are mandated to wear helmets, while those 18 and older are not. Officers encourage helmet use and highlight safety courses provided by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety to improve riding skills and reduce accidents.
As of June 2025, Tulsa has recorded at least six motorcycle fatalities, and approximately 80% of motorcycle accidents statewide result in injury or death.
The debate about helmet laws continues to provoke discussion, particularly regarding legal implications for riders involved in accidents. Local attorney Joel LaCourse emphasized that while helmet use is linked to increased safety, the choice to wear one remains controversial.
