CORSICA, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Two people died, and two others were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on SD Highway 44 west of Corsica on April 19.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 2016 Ford Fusion, driven by 52-year-old Carey Utterback of Mitchell, was traveling east near mile marker 325.
The vehicle left the roadway, struck a field approach, vaulted over a fence, rolled, and came to rest in a field.
Utterback and a passenger, 72-year-old Peggy Iverson of Sioux Falls, were pronounced dead at the scene. Utterback was wearing a seatbelt; Iverson’s seatbelt use is under investigation.
Two additional passengers, 37-year-old Bethanie Iverson and 36-year-old Benjamin Iverson of Sioux Falls, were airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Neither was reportedly wearing a seatbelt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
