VSP Reports 15 Deaths in 14 Crashes During Holiday Weekend Across Commonwealth.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police reported 15 fatalities from 14 auto crashes during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, occurring from July 2-5.

Authorities confirmed that these accidents took place across multiple counties, including Alleghany, Appomattox, Pulaski, Roanoke, Danville, Smyth, Brunswick, Fauquier, Frederick (2 incidents), Nottaway, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania, and Suffolk.

According to preliminary data, seatbelt non-usage contributed to at least four of the fatalities, while excessive speed was involved in at least four incidents. VSP emphasized the preventable nature of these crashes, urging all motorists to buckle up, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions.

During the 2026 Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) initiative, troopers issued a total of 3,153 speeding tickets, 1,540 reckless driving citations, 70 arrests for impaired driving, and 474 seatbelt violations. Additionally, 133 citations for improper child restraints were issued.

Funds from the citations contribute to court fees and the Commonwealth’s Literary Fund, aimed at supporting public education initiatives.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate these incidents, with further details expected as the inquiries progress.
