CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WDTV) – A recent study indicates West Virginia is among the deadliest states for work zone driving.
According to research by Beck and Beck, West Virginia ranks ninth nationwide for fatal work zone crashes, averaging 4.59 fatalities per million licensed drivers from 2020 to 2024. This rate exceeds the national average of 3.48 per million by approximately 32%.
The analysis highlights an average of 5.2 fatal work zone incidents annually in the state, with data sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
Factors contributing to this high rate include challenging road conditions such as steep grades, narrow mountain corridors, and aging infrastructure, as well as the impact of work zones that often reduce lane widths and obstruct sight lines.
