72-Year-Old Motorcycle Accident Survivor Attributes Recovery to Whole Blood Transfusion
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Guy Theriot, 72, spoke at a press conference on Nov. 24, crediting whole blood transfusions for his recovery after a near-fatal motorcycle accident on CO 67 N. in August.
Theriot was involved in a crash while en route to Sedalia with a friend, resulting in broken ribs, a kidney injury, and a ruptured spleen. He recounted the incident, noting he was conscious of his friend supporting his head as he became increasingly aware during his medical emergency.
According to authorities, paramedics had to make a critical decision between airlift and ground transport to UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs. Due to the introduction of whole blood transfusions in June, they opted for the ambulance, which potentially saved Theriot’s life.
The whole blood program is part of a partnership between UCHealth and the local health service district. This initiative allows for immediate and effective treatment in trauma cases, marking a significant advancement in emergency medical care.
