KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A woman has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a motorcycle in Kalamazoo on April 14.
Carol Kosch, 55, faces a felony charge for failing to stop after an accident resulting in death. She was arraigned Tuesday and released on a $500 personal recognizance bond.
Authorities said the crash occurred when Kosch’s black Jeep Grand Cherokee turned in front of 28-year-old Azariah Smith’s motorcycle on Gull Road near a Speedway gas station.
Smith was ejected from his motorcycle and later died at the hospital, according to Kalamazoo Township police.
Witnesses reported seeing Kosch drive away from the scene without checking on Smith. Video evidence confirmed Kosch’s actions before the collision.
According to court records, Kosch’s husband notified police that she was the driver involved. Kosch claimed she thought she hit a sedan and fled out of fear.
Kalamazoo County Assisting Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Williams noted that further charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
Kosch is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on July 8, followed by a preliminary examination on July 15.
