UPDATE: 4/13/2026 — A motorcycle crash on I-68 in Morgantown resulted in one fatality on Sunday afternoon.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on Interstate 68 westbound near mile marker 13.
The motorcycle driver, identified as 24-year-old James Smith III of Morgantown, lost control and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
WVU Executive Director of Strategic Communications Shauna Johnson confirmed that Smith was a senior at West Virginia University.
Authorities have notified Smith’s family, and an investigation is ongoing. No additional information is available at this time.
ORIGINAL: MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Both the westbound lanes of I-68 and the fast lane of the eastbound lanes are closed due to the accident.
According to the Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency, the crash took place at mile marker 13, between Coopers Rock and Cheat Lake.
The emergency services are asking the public to avoid the area.
The Monongalia County 911 communication center stated the scene remains active, with the West Virginia State Police leading the response, supported by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department, and Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department.
Details on further injuries have not been disclosed.
