An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed Sunday night after crashing into a light pole at North Ash Street and West Courtland Avenue in Spokane, Washington. Kiril Herlazhyi was pronounced dead at the scene after the accident, which occurred around 8:40 p.m.
According to the Spokane Police Department, witnesses reported that Herlazhyi and several vehicles appeared to be racing moments before he lost control of his motorcycle. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Herlazhyi’s identity and ruled the death accidental due to multiple blunt-force injuries. The police are continuing their investigation into the crash.
In response to the incident, city officials have implemented a two-week lane closure on southbound Ash Street between Kiernan and Euclid avenues as part of a new Emergency Streets safety program. This includes the installation of traffic cones, signage, and a speed feedback sign aimed at improving driver awareness.
Spokane’s Director of Transportation, Jon Snyder, indicated that the city is collecting speed and traffic data during this period to assess the effectiveness of the measures.
